Do solar panels need direct sunshine?

Will my solar panels work during a power cut?

Standard grid-connected systems automatically switch off during a power cut for safety reasons.

However, certain battery systems can provide backup power if designed for this. If backup capability is important to you, we can specify this at quotation stage.

Can I come off the grid completely?

For most homes, fully disconnecting from the grid would require a large solar array and significant battery storage.

Most customers choose to reduce reliance on the grid rather than eliminate it entirely.

Could panels blow off in a storm?

No — not when installed correctly.

Panels are secured using a roof hook and rail mounting system designed to withstand UK wind loading and installed in line with current regulations.

What is a solar battery?

A solar battery stores excess electricity generated during the day so it can be used later — typically in the evening or overnight.

This increases self-consumption and reduces electricity imported from the grid.

Do I need scaffolding?

It is typically erected a few days before installation and removed shortly afterwards.

Installation & Requirements

How long does EV charger installation take?

A standard domestic EV charger installation typically takes 3 to 6 hours.

More complex installations — such as long cable runs, electrical upgrades or groundworks — may take longer. Any additional work will always be discussed and agreed in advance.

Do I need to upgrade my consumer unit?

Not always. We can often install a separate consumer unit just for the EV charger. If your existing unit is outdated or non-compliant, an upgrade may still be needed.

We’ll assess this during your survey and advise accordingly.

What is main protective bonding and why might it need upgrading?

Main protective bonding connects your gas and water services to your electrical earthing system.

If bonding does not meet current regulations, it must be upgraded before installing an EV charger. This ensures the installation is safe and compliant.

How far can the charger be from my consumer unit?

The distance between the charger and consumer unit affects installation cost.

Longer cable runs may require:

  • Larger cable sizes
  • Additional protective devices
  • Surface trunking or underground ducting

Can my EV charger be installed outside?

Yes.

Do I need DNO approval for an EV charger?

Most domestic chargers are 7kW, which typically adds around 25–35 miles of range per hour, depending on the vehicle.
